September: In the early morning, it’s cold and mysteriously foggy. During the daytime, it’s nice and warm. Leaves change colour, blueberries and lingonberries are everywhere, and huge mushrooms pop up. In the evening, the temperature drops to 2 degrees sometimes, and it’s time to light the fire. We love September. It’s also a busy month, in which we can and have to finish some things outside we couldn’t do when we had many guests.
No problem in this fine weather. Examples? It’s time to chop and pile up the last part of our wood. We already did most of it in June, but we definitely will need some more this winter. And some painting is still waiting for us: our volunteers have already painted a lot, but since the weather changed in August (rainy), there’s still much to finish. We just started with our veranda and windows of the Hölada.
In the kitchen garden, we can still harvest beans, salad, cucumbers (now and then), zucchini, beets, and huge pumpkins. We hope these will last because our dog thinks they are great balls to play with.
Of course, Mireille picks berries to make jam. Our bushes with black and red currants are still full. We don’t really like them, but last year, we discovered that they combine very well in jam.
Last but not least, if you want to taste some tea this winter from our garden, just ask. We are now drying herbs in the attic to make a tea that tastes like mint, lemon, meadowsweet, and chamomile. We have already filled some jars.
Because it’s sunny outside, it’s also a perfect time to explore some beautiful hiking places. One of them we can certainly recommend to you is Hålåheden, about 10 km north of us. It’s a vast forest where it seems as if a big giant threw hundreds of large stones all around him, covered by moss. If you wear hiking shoes, climb into it and enjoy the fairytale forest. It feels like the stones come to life now and then, a bit spooky when you hear nothing except a creaking tree.
