Räksmörgås/prawn sandwich

Räksmörgås / prawn sandwich

Whenever we were on holiday here in Sweden and saw räksmörgås or räkmacka on the menu, we knew what to take: a prawn sandwich! It’s always delicious and easy to make, we discovered. It’s a great dish to surprise your guests with. We already made it for family and friends. It’s always fun to see how people are going to eat it! 4 prawn sandwiches About 1 kg peeled prawns 4 slices of white or brown bread 1 crisp salad […]

Let’ go outside!

September: In the early morning, it’s cold and mysteriously foggy. During the daytime, it’s nice and warm. Leaves change colour, blueberries and lingonberries are everywhere, and huge mushrooms pop up. In the evening, the temperature drops to 2 degrees sometimes, and it’s time to light the fire. We love September. It’s also a busy month, in which we can and have to finish some things outside we couldn’t do when we had many guests. No problem in this fine weather. […]

Zorngården Mora

Explore some art instead of nature

For some people there’s no holiday without some art. My cousin is such a person. So we went to the Zornmuseum in Mora. A nice little museum with beautiful paintings by Anders Zorn (1860-1920). Zorn is one of Sweden’s most famous artist, from Mora. No one has painted water, created portraits with the same bravoure and reproduced women as sensual as Zorn. You can see some reproductions of his work in the Hölada and Fähus. Unique and really different are […]

A day at Näsets Marcusgård

A day at Näsets Marcusgård, through the eyes of Thijs Berkman our ”handy man” who volunteered at us this summer. Thanks Thijs!

A new school year, the kitchen garden and noodle-soup

What has the start of new school year, the kitchen garden and our favorite noodle-dish to do with each other? Well, the end of the summer: more time to spend in the garden, time to harvest and put it all in delicious meals. And the dish we are the most happy with, is our Chinese noodle dish (You can find the recipe under recipes to share)! For me as a ‘kitchen garden beginner’ it was real fun to find out […]

Chinese noodles-soup

Our love for this special dish comes from our trip through China, already 12 years ago. Willem and I backpacked through Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and China for some months. What a wonderful food experiences we had! When we returned home we bought a beautiful book full of Chinese recipes and tried some. Nowadays two recipes survived, and the one for noodles is our favorite. Unfortunately we still haven’t succeed to make the dish taste exactly like in China, but our recipe […]

Treetent Nadia

What brings camping in our treetent to an Brazilian girl?

We brought our first Work Away to the train to her next destination. Mixed feelings: sad that she’s leaving but happy that this Brazilian girl goes on to her next adventure. Before coming here she wanted to hike and make pictures (since she is photographer), and of course helping us. Just what we needed, we wanted her to make pictures of Näsets Marcusgård and ourselves. We also had a secret mission: we wanted her to experience Sweden like Ronia the […]

Adventurous Dutchies dare to go off road

Who dares to go off road: camp and make new paths in the beautiful wilderness near Furudal? Hanna and Atse from Holland wanted to hike in Sweden anyway and took up the challenge. Hanna has already some sweet memories of the Swedish forest, but Atse hiked more in the southern mountains like the Pyrenees. Last Saturday we picked them up from the train in Rättvik. They had an interesting trip, because they had landed on Stockholms Skavska airport instead of […]

Älggräsdricka / Juice of Meadowsweet flowers

Meadowsweet is a perennial herb that grows on damp meadows in Europe and Western Asia. It’s also known as Queen of the Meadow, Pride of the Meadow, Meadow-Wort and Bride wort. It’s an excellent plant for attracting bees, as it’s delicate and creamy-white flowers have a strong, sweet smell. And … meadowsweet is considered to be a sacred herb by Celtic Druids, who used Meadowsweet to enhance their love spells! Meadowsweet has also been used in herbal medicine – apparently […]

Ärteråsens fäbodar

Let’s keep it a secret… the trail to Ärteråsen

Always best to recommend a hike to a nice place when you made it yourself and you liked it. Well, there are many trails on my wish list, but the one to Ärteråsen (about 8 km) I was most curious about because it starts right behind our farm. It’s an old path the villagers took with their cattle to go to their summer farms up the hill, Ärteråsen. Our Work Away volunteer Nadia, from Brazil, is a photographer, so it […]
