Adventurous Dutchies dare to go off road

Who dares to go off road: camp and make new paths in the beautiful wilderness near Furudal? Hanna and Atse from Holland wanted to hike in Sweden anyway and took up the challenge. Hanna has already some sweet memories of the Swedish forest, but Atse hiked more in the southern mountains like the Pyrenees. Last Saturday we picked them up from the train in Rättvik. They had an interesting trip, because they had landed on Stockholms Skavska airport instead of […]

Älggräsdricka / Juice of Meadowsweet flowers

Meadowsweet is a perennial herb that grows on damp meadows in Europe and Western Asia. It’s also known as Queen of the Meadow, Pride of the Meadow, Meadow-Wort and Bride wort. It’s an excellent plant for attracting bees, as it’s delicate and creamy-white flowers have a strong, sweet smell. And … meadowsweet is considered to be a sacred herb by Celtic Druids, who used Meadowsweet to enhance their love spells! Meadowsweet has also been used in herbal medicine – apparently […]

Ärteråsens fäbodar

Let’s keep it a secret… the trail to Ärteråsen

Always best to recommend a hike to a nice place when you made it yourself and you liked it. Well, there are many trails on my wish list, but the one to Ärteråsen (about 8 km) I was most curious about because it starts right behind our farm. It’s an old path the villagers took with their cattle to go to their summer farms up the hill, Ärteråsen. Our Work Away volunteer Nadia, from Brazil, is a photographer, so it […]

Interior-design and shopping: such a fine combination!

Today I made a day-trip with my mother which might be the perfect day for you too while you are here: worth sharing. A day of culture, nice food and shopping. First we went to Carl och Karin Larssons house in Sunborn, near Falun. From Näsets Marcusgård it is about an one hour drive through a nice scenic landscape. You probably know Carl Larsson (Stockholm, May 28, 1853 – Falun, January 22, 1919) from his watercolors with scenes of his […]

Swedish Midsommer: the smallest things are often the best.

Swedish Midsommar: Guests in both houses, flowers, sun, good food and a long table with family and friends and kids laughing and playing in and around the pool. That’s how we imagined this wonderful feast should be. Yes we know, the weather is mostly terrible on the actual midsommarday, and family is not always around. But this year our perfect picture as we had it in my mind became reality. Midsommar is one of this country’s biggest feasts. It celebrates […]

skriva eva ullerud

Last year’s guest in ‘Skriva’

A nice surprise in the mailbox today: an article about Eva Ullerud in ’Skriva’, my favorite Swedish magazine about writing. Eva was one of our guests last year. Back then I was very proud to have a writer in the house, since I still have plans to resume writing and write a bestseller. But moreover for I would love to organize a writing workshop here at Näsets Marcusgård, together with an author. Such a writing week or weekend can be […]

strawberrycake

End-of-the-schoolyear celebrationcake

The Swedes celebrate everything with cakes, with coffee (fika) or as a dessert. Great, since I love baking. The only problem for me is which cake to bake: choose from the huge amount of recipes that pass me on Facebook or I see in magazines. From all these a strawberrycake seemed to be the real traditional for the end-of- the- schoolyearcelebration, so I chose this one this year. And it tasted wonderful! Our guests were also enthusiastic  about it. Of […]

strawberrycake

Parents, you deserve a holiday too!

The end-of-school celebration, a big thing in Sweden. Our boys just had theirs here in Ore Kyrka (church). Let the summer begin! The ingredients are: teachers in Ore-costumes (from the area), nicely dressed pupils, Astrid Lindgrens “Little Ida’s Summer Song”, and every class sings a song. At the end the pupils of the ninth class (final) get their diploma. After saying goodbye to the teachers it’s time to go home and eat strawberrycake (well, that’s what we did). It’s a […]

Pick your own kitchen herbs

Pick your own kitchen herbs

Spring! After months of stagnation nature suddenly explodes. The light increases too, so everything grows like crazy. Willem already enjoyed his first lawn mowing activity. We have set up the greenhouse too and made our kitchen garden bigger. Indoors, I have sown vegetables a while ago: it was finally  time to  move them to the greenhouse. Last year I tried some tomatoes, cucumber and zucchini. This year I’ll add chili pepper and  bell pepper in the greenhouse. Outside I have sown […]

Swedish crispbread

Versions of knäckebröd have been enjoyed in Sweden since antiquity. This one is very easy and  tastes nice with a piece of cheese or salad. Or eat them as a healthy snack: to me they are like chips! 2 dl spelt flour or corn flour 2 dl sunflower seeds 1.5 dl sesame seeds 0.5 dl olive oil 2 dl hot / boiling water 2 tsp seasalt Stir everything together in a bowl. Slowly stir in water until a thick, chunky […]
