Sustainability
Our way of making the world a better place:
In the long term, we want to contribute to sustainability positively. For us, this means giving more back instead of just taking away from nature, society and the earth's assets. When we think of sustainability, we consider three aspects: environmental, economic and social. This is a trinity, and we are looking for a balance. We take the initiative and take it step by step.
Practical:
We recognize that we cannot do everything at once; we must prioritize to achieve our sustainability goal and find a balance in our actions. We try to make the most sustainable choices and not hide our shortcomings by chatting nicely for marketing purposes and/or to feel better. Nor do we believe in compensation by paying money. Acting is it, and greenwashing does not work for us.
The global goals form the basis of our sustainability work. We use the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) criteria and indicators for hotels and accommodation to provide structure to achieve our sustainability goal. It means that we must:
- We prioritize local sourcing, opting for environmentally friendly alternatives that uphold the same high-quality standards, taste, and appearance whenever possible."
- Build as ecologically as possible with reusable materials.
- With the least possible impact on nature/everything blends into nature.
- Climate-friendly, passive, well-insulated, water-saving, rainwater recycling.
- We want to provide a safe and inclusive workplace and accommodation for employees, guests, partners and ourselves regardless of their background.
- We inform employees, partners, and guests about what sustainability means to us, what actions we are taking, what they can expect from us, and what we can expect from them.
- We take the village with us in our development and seek a balance between its development and ours.
- No impact on neighbours.
How we realize our mission, ambition and goals in sustainability is expressed in our four core values: realistic, inventive, sympathetic and transparent. We use the indicators for the GSTC criteria for hotels and accommodations to provide structure to achieve our sustainability goal.
How:
Every year, we measure ourselves against the sustainability criteria for hotels and accommodations that GSTC gives us, which provides insight and shows progress and shortcomings. This is, among other things, input for our business plan and annual action plan.
The most critical measures for 2023/2024 are:
- In favour of more biodiversity, we offer various workshops, including the opportunity to paint a birdhouse or bat house, and we will increase the placement of edible plants and flowers.
- Our priority is to find a solution for better and more logical waste sorting by our guests and to start informing guests better about this to minimise (wrongly sorted) waste and food waste.
- We continue to focus on more qualitative and sustainable cooperation.
- In addition to Nordic Forest Eco Lodge, we will develop a sustainable concept focusing on the business market.
- We need to look at our financial sustainability, perhaps looking at other revenue models or an extra leg to stand on.
