Ice hockey in Furudal, a must do if you visit Sweden!

Our holiday homes were filled the last few days, with my (Willem) family visiting us. A so-called Terstegen-weekend, which meant a weekend full of memories, stories, good food and activities. Besides some walks from our own issued booklet: “8 trails to walk around Ore/Furudal”, we choose to visit the Falun copper mine with its recently modernized museum and had lunch at restaurant Geshwornergården. Unlike me, my family is very sporty: yoga, horse riding, mountain biking/cycling, and football. To let them […]

The top 10 tips around Näsets Marcusgård (Furudal)

In less than ten weeks, it will be Midsummer in Sweden, the start of the summer season! Whether you’ll stay at Näsets Marcusgård or elsewhere, check out the Ore (Furudal) surroundings, do some local shopping and enjoy the countryside scenery. Here’s a little guide to summer activities and culture around Ore. #1 Go for a swim in Lake Ore (Oresjön) or Lake Skattungen Both lakes have many private swimming spots, sandy beaches, and places where you can walk a couple […]

Furudal: a great place for Nordic skiing!

A crystal clear sky, sun, snowy pine trees, crispy snow. This weekend was great to go out cross country skiing: for the fun and I have to train for the Tjejvasan 2017 (Vasaloppet) in February. I must be honest: I left out that it was minus 15 and in the beginning I felt totally frozen, but after 15 minutes I felt fine again. That Furudal is a great place for Nordic skiing is not new. But that village has a […]

Dutch skatingfever in Dalarna – “It giet oan”

Although today it is snowy and still above zero, the freezing temperatures are in sight! The Swedish weather forecasters predict mid-November will be colder for Dalarna. Being a Dutchie, I automatically feel all excited: when can we skate again! In Holland, everyone gets Skatingfever when a severe cold is predicted (mostly in February) because it’s rare. This stays in your blood. We even have a word for it in Holland: Elfstedenkoorts, after the Elfstedentocht. The Elfstedentocht is a speed skating […]

What to do during fall break? Explore spooky sites at the countryside @Näsets Marcusgård

Fall break: super boring? No, it’s super cool! If you know how and where to spend it. Walk, play, go out and explore! Fill your days with special fall-activities you’ll find all over the place during your break and then hygge in our Fähus or Hölada. From spooky activities in Siljans theme parks to an outdoor cinema, a campfire or exploring our autumn forests or if it’s raining cats and dogs, do experiments in a laboratory of the Falun mine, […]

Zorngården Mora

Explore some art instead of nature

For some people there’s no holiday without some art. My cousin is such a person. So we went to the Zornmuseum in Mora. A nice little museum with beautiful paintings by Anders Zorn (1860-1920). Zorn is one of Sweden’s most famous artist, from Mora. No one has painted water, created portraits with the same bravoure and reproduced women as sensual as Zorn. You can see some reproductions of his work in the Hölada and Fähus. Unique and really different are […]

Let’s keep it a secret… the trail to Ärteråsen

Always best to recommend a hike to a nice place when you made it yourself and you liked it. Well, there are many trails on my wish list, but the one to Ärteråsen (about 8 km) I was most curious about because it starts right behind our farm. It’s an old path the villagers took with their cattle to go to their summer farms up the hill, Ärteråsen. Our Work Away volunteer Nadia, from Brazil, is a photographer, so it […]
